UNICEF hails Morocco's leadership in young girls education
Morocco, Education, 8/20/2003
UNICEF Director General, Carol Bellamy, hailed in Rabat on Tuesday Morocco's leadership in young girls education.
Bellamy also lauded the Moroccan government's resolve to give young girls a chance to have access to school and facilitate access to education for all Moroccan children.
In 1997, four in ten rural girls aged between 6 and 11 years old were registered in school. However, in 2002, eight in ten girls of the same age were registered in school, said Bellamy who is currently on a visit to Morocco.
"The sustained determination and the political resolve to allow access to education for all children in Morocco is remarkable, she underlined in a national encounter on the schooling of young girls in rural areas.
Bellamy reaffirmed the UN organization's commitment to back the actions of the Moroccan government in a bid to "reduce the gap between the schooling of boys and girls," reiterating UNICEF's support to the efforts of all partners to achieve "education for all" as well as development objectives.
For the Moroccan minister of education Habib El Malki, the success of the implementation of the national charter of education and the reforms launched in this realm, goes through the schooling of young girls in general and those living in rural areas in particular. 2 million children in Morocco are unschooled.
