King Mohammed calls for world strategy for young people
Regional-Morocco, Culture, 8/20/2003
Morocco's King Mohammed VI on Tuesday called for developing a world strategy for young people under the auspices of the United Nations and through a specialised international institution.
"It is (...) necessary to stimulate the enthusiasm of people of goodwill and to pool their potentialities in order to develop a world strategy for young people," said the king in a message to the World Youth Congress, held in Casablanca August 16-28.
The Royal message, read out on behalf of the king by Prince Moulay Rachid, insisted that this initiative "would require sustainable, concerted efforts, under UN auspices and through a specialised international institution, which should stem from a clear vision, based on the principles of cooperation, coexistence and tolerance."
King Mohammed VI noted that an international institution for world youth is likely to enhance what is lacking in today's world, namely mutual understanding and interaction between peoples and nations.
The king pleaded for building more productive relations between states, underlining that there is a pressing need to encourage interactive communication between generations and a need for young people to avail themselves of the experience and know-how passed by previous generations especially in a world marked by wide disparities and imbalances as well as antagonisms and regional and local disputes.
"Our aim is to curb the scourge of poverty, protect many countries and communities from the spectre of famine which looms over them, and improve the condition of our continent's environment in order to preserve its eco-system and to safeguard the security of its people," he said.
For King Mohammed VI, the wide disparities and imbalances, as well as regional and local disputes are "exploited by some to spread extremism and terrorism." Hence, he said, it is crucial to foster a culture of peace, engage in a dialogue and a constructive debate, stick to international conventions comply with UN resolutions and abide by the decisions reached at international summits.
He underscored, in this vein, that Morocco has been "a perfect illustration of coexistence between faiths and creeds." "This is why Morocco is so keen to fulfil its international obligations and to defend just causes," he said, recalling Morocco's position and role on the Euro-Mediterranean and the Arab-African scenes.
On the World Youth Congress, King Mohammed VI said the encounter is very important "in view of the strong interaction which exists between the visions and perceptions held by young people, on the one hand, and the fundamental questions affecting the present and the future of human societies, on the other."
He also hailed the motto of the youth "be the change" which conveys so mush confidence and optimism about the future.
