Egypt-USA, Politics, 8/20/2003

The Egyptian activist in human rights Saad Eddine Ibrahim considered that the American- British invasion of Iraq is a strong warning message to the Arab regimes, noting that this matter might help to encourage political reforms in the region.

In a press interview, Ibrahim said that the "war has notified all rulers that they have to change, otherwise their fate will be similar, if not identical to that ( of the former Iraqi President) Saddam Hussein."

Ibrahim, a teacher in sociology who spent 14 months in prison in Egypt under the charge of receiving foreign funding for "Ibn Khaldoun center" which he runs said that the US has to divert its attention now "to pressure" the governments in the region in order to implement political reforms. Ibrahim who carries the American nationality added "a coordinated American pressure might have a constructive role, in particular in Egypt, which has political and economic ties with the USA and is witnessing a democratic movement, which has not grown yet."

Ibrahim said that "the USA has to notify the Egyptian government that if it wants to continue keeping good relations with the US and to get favorable trade agreements and aid, and it has to seriously move with implementing democracy." Ibrahim described the current political regime in Egypt as "static and corrupted."

Ibrahim ( 64 year old) is visiting the Atlanta, USA, to take part in the meeting for the American society for sociology.
