Iraqi toppled Vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan arrested
Iraq-USA, Military, 8/20/2003
US President George W. Bush has welcomed the detention of the former Iraqi Vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan, noting that he is confident that more Iraqi officials will be arrested.
The US defense department stressed that its forces received Ramadan after he was detained in al-Musil by a Kurdish party.
A prominent official in the Kurdistani National Federation party said that Ramadan was handed over to the American forces after he was detained at the hands of Kurdish fighters in al-Musil to the north of Iraq.
Ramadan was arrested in al-Musil city to the north of Iraq while he was wearing an Arab costume accompanied by members of his family. Ramadan was one of the closest associate to the toppled Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and accompanied him since he assumed power.
Meantime, one American soldier was killed when an explosive went off when an American military vehicle was passing in one of Baghdad's quarters.
Witnesses said that the explosion took place on Monday while the American vehicle was running on the road leading to al-Basra, and this resulted in killing the driver of the vehicle and wounding of its members.
