Morocco-Regional, Culture, 8/19/2003
Morocco is a symbol of tolerance and solidarity and a country where mosques, churches and synagogues co-exist side by side, president of Peace Child International David Woolcombe said on the fringes of the World Congress of the Youth held this August 16-28 in Casablanca.
Woolcombe also highlighted in an interview with MAP Moroccans' deep respect of other peoples and cultures.
On the congress which brings together some 1,000 young delegates aged 15 to 25, he said this international event is an opportunity to encourage young people to bring their contribution to sustainable development and the fight against illiteracy, AIDS, and poverty.
Peace Child International, he insisted, calls all political decision-makers to fund studies of young people on development.
Several delegations representing 148 countries are taking part in the second edition of the congress that started Saturday.
Participants started Sunday preparations to visit various regions of the country where they will participate in more than 120 sustainable development projects part of the proximity policy.
The action projects deal with poverty, food-security, fighting AIDS and illiteracy, health, the promotion of cultural and sports activities and gender equality, environment protection and natural resources preservations.
Renowned figures from the world of culture, politics, art, sports and communication are invited to the congress and as well as UN good-will ambassadors to supervise and sponsor action projects.
