Morocco supplies spain with power energy
Morocco-Spain, Economics, 8/19/2003
Morocco supplied Spain five times last week with power energy through the interconnection of Morocco and Spain grids via the Detroit and Gibraltar to meet the local need in energy, sources close to Spain's Red Electrica company (REE) said.
REE was compelled to import electricity from Morocco to avert a possible power failure due to the huge consumption of electricity caused by the heat wave that the country has been witnessing since the beginning of August.
Some 200 Magewatts/H transited daily last week from Tangier to another center of interconnection station set up in Tarifa for three hours from Monday to Wednesday.
REE, which is bound with a cooperation agreement with the Moroccan National Office of Electricity (ONE), said the electrical interconnection was due to carry on its usual functions on Thursday.
According to the state-owned electric company of Sevilla Endesa, electricity demand in Andalusia increased by almost 24 percent during the 11 first days of August compared to the same period in 2002.
