Three houses demolished in Jerusalem, five Palestinians detained
Palestine-Israel, Military, 8/19/2003
Israel yesterday alleged that there are strong differences between the army and the general security department "Shabak" over withdrawal from four Palestinian cities in the West Bank. A matter which draws suspicion on the possibility of completing this withdrawal over which security talks will be made today between the Palestinian and Israeli sides.
Meantime, the occupation forces demolished three houses in eastern Jerusalem and arrested five persons from Jerusalem accusing them of trying to form a Palestinian security force in the city.
The Israeli daily Ma'ariv talked about deep differences between the Shabak and the army on handing over the Palestinian cities of Areiha, Qalqilya, Toulkarem and Ramullah to the Palestinian Authority. Shabak expressed strong opposition to evacuate the Palestinian cities because "the Palestinian authority does nothing against terrorism infrastructure," and therefore evacuating the cities at the current condition will be conducive to "new wave of terrorism in the near future and rebuilding of terrorism structures and forming new cells and networks."
Israel also cancelled the withdrawal which was due yesterday from Areiha and Qalqilya following the failure of a Palestinian- Israeli security meeting on the question of the wanted Palestinians and Israel's persistence to keep its check points around Qalqilya.
Meantime, the Israeli bulldozers demolished with the protection of scores of special units soldiers, three Palestinian homoes located in al-Ashqareyah area in Beit Hanina to the north of the holy city.
Last week the occupation municipality announced that there are 6,000 Palestinian houses built unlicensed, including 100 in al-Ashqareyah quarters, are threatened to demolishing.
The Israeli police announced in a statement that five Palestinians were detained accused of trying to form a Palestinian security force in East Jerusalem. The statement explained that the five were detained on Sunday evening in al-Salwan quarters to the south east of the old city and they were suspected of being trained during the past weeks in Areiha
