Morocco to host world youth congress
Morocco-Regional, Culture, 8/16/2003

Morocco will play host this August 16-28 to the second edition of the World Congress of the Youth that is organised in partnership between the Moroccan Youth Forum of the Third Millennium and the non governmental organisation Peace Child International.

The congress will bring together 1000 young delegates aged between 15 and 25 from all over the world to discuss the theme of promoting tolerance, solidarity and youth-led action for sustainable development.

The young people are selected through national consultations organised by the countries invited to participate in the congress, or chosen as active members of NGOs involved in sustainable development.

The congress will cover several themes including the fight against poverty and the achievement of food security, the fight against illiteracy, Maternal, infant and youth healthcare, the promotion of gender equality, the fight against HIV/ AIDS and the promotion of cultural, sports, and leisure activities for youth.

"The congres will certainly show that peace in the world is possible and that tolerance is a reality," the national coordinator of the event, Driss Guerraoui, told MAP.

"The participation of 1000 young delegates from 148 countries in the congress is in itself a message on the possibility to restore peace in the world," he added.

About choosing the "Promotion of Youth's Actions for Tolerance, Solidarity and Sustainble Development" as a theme of the congress, Guerraoui said the painful events of May 16 in Casablanca, proved that Morocco's choice of the theme is right.

The coordinator believes that the participation of this number of countries and the expression of solidairty by states and civil societies throughout the world is " a direct response to the attacks."

According to Guerraoui, a committee will be set up to guarantee the follow up of the recommendations that will be adopted by the congress, particularly those that will appear in the Declaration of Casablanca.

This international event, which follows the first Millennium Youth Congress, held in Hawaii in 1999 is supported by public and private national and international institutions, including the agencies of the United Nations.

Personalities from the world of art, culture, sport, and politics as well as the United Nations goodwill ambassadors will be invited to the congress to sponsor the selected action projects.
