Sudanese government - SPLM negotiation goes ahead
Sudan, Politics, 8/15/2003

Sudanese Foreign Minister Mustafa Ismail on Wednesday called on the media to create a positive atmosphere to help render a success the current round of talks held in Kenya between the government and Sudan people's Liberation Movement (SPLM).

In an interview with Cairo radio over the telephone from Nairobi, the Sudanese top diplomat said that the Sudanese government was keen on seeing the seventh round of talks turning out well so that peace and justice could prevail in Sudan.

"It was too early to assess the current round of negotiations but the fact that it was being held means tacitly that negotiations were on the right path," he said.

The seventh round of talks between Khartoum and SPLM opened in Cairo Monday and dealt with security measures and sharing of power between Khartoum and SPLM. During the sixth round of talks in Nukuru, Kenya, in July, the Sudanese government refused proposals presented by the sponsors of the talks on grounds that they are not applicable.

The Sudanese People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) leader John Garang arrived in Cairo yesterday on a visit to Egypt during which he will brief a number of Egyptian officials on the latest developments in the Sudanese crisis.
