Trial of alleged three suicide bombers postponed
Morocco, Local, 8/13/2003
The court of appeal of Casablanca postponed to August 18 studying the case of three suicide bombers belonging to the group of Mohamed Omari, who are prosecuted in relation with terrorist attacks that hit Casablanca last May 16 claiming the lives of 44 people.
The three defendants are Mohamed El Omari, Rachid Jalil and Yassine Lahnech who are mainly sued for conspiracy, undermining the security of the state, sabotage and killing, premeditated sabotage attempt and complicity in acts of violence that led to permanent disability.
The lawyers of El Omari and Jalil had based their arguments on the fact that the defendants "voluntarily renounced" to the terrorist acts, appealing the court not to maintain the charge of premeditated murder.
The prosecutor deemed that Mohamed El Omari and Rachid Jalil are clearly guilty since they were caught in the act and demanded exemplary punishments against the three defendants. He also insisted that the three suicide bombers' renunciation to blow themselves was not voluntary.
Ten people were sentenced last month to capital punishment part of terrorist attacks.
