Diplomatic Lebanese campaign to challenge the Israeli threats
Lebanon-Israel, Military, 8/12/2003
Lebanon has started a diplomatic campaign to withstand the Israeli threats following an exchange of bombardment through borders that resulted in killing of one Israeli and wounding other 4 on Sunday, while the Israeli forces launched raids at the Lebanese border areas and broke the sound barrier over the southern district of Beirut.
The Lebanese foreign minister Jean Obeid held in separate talks with the ambassadors of the permanent member UN security council five states, accredited to Lebanon and the representative of the UN secretary general in south Lebanon and briefed them on his country's position concerning the situation on the Lebanese- Israeli front.
The Lebanese minister asked these countries to interfere "in order to put an end to the Israeli threats and prevent Israel from bombarding the Lebanese territories." In a press conference, following his meetings, he said that what Lebanon is doing is mere self-defense.
Obeid also defended the position of the Hizbullah party and stressed that the Israeli intelligence ordered the blowing up of the booby trapped car on August 2nd and this resulted in killing Ali Saleh, the activist in Hizbullah party in the southern district of Beirut. Hizbullah said that blowing up the car was a violation for the truce. A matter which avails it the tight to retaliate.
For his part the Lebanese President Emil Lahoud condemned what he called the "Israeli air terrorism" which targeted the airspace of Beirut, noting that this comes in the context of the Israeli move which aims at destabilizing the region.
