Algeria has to take into account Morocco's national interests, press
Morocco-Algeria, Politics, 8/12/2003

"Algeria has to stop its speech of good intentions and take into account Morocco's national interests," Assahara Al Maghribia daily wrote on Sunday, underlining that the Sahara is part and parcel of Morocco and will not be subject to any bargain.

The pro-government paper believes that Algeria has to give up its speech that contains wishes for normalization and should show genuine resolve to discuss pending issues.

By accepting a political settlement to the artificial conflict over the Sahara, Assahara Al Maghribia notes, Morocco aspired to "shed light on the reality of the question and say that this problem really involves Morocco and Algeria." When Moroccan officials insist on the necessity to engage in a dialogue with Algeria, "they are perfectly aware that Algeria is the direct responsible for this artificial problem." Thus, they adopted the principle of good-neighborhood and pleaded for examining all issues in a clear-cut manner, a sine qua non condition to trespass all obstacles and restore security and peace in the region.

In the same connection, "La Gazette du Maroc" weekly (Independent) said it is crucial to be united more than ever to foil the conspiracies that target the country's territorial integrity. The paper believes that the meeting last week of King Mohammed VI advisor, Mohamed Meziane Belfkih, with the major political parties' leaders may be considered an additional sign to the mobilization of the national front which will definitely reinforce Morocco's position in the period of the renewal of UN special mission for the Sahara that will last until the end of October.

The UN had decided to extend MINURSO (French acronym of the UN mission in the Sahara) until next October.
