Two explosions near British embassy in Baghdad; American soldier, two Iraqi policemen killed
Iraq-USA, Military, 8/12/2003
The American forces killed two Iraqi policemen and wounded a third when they suspected an attempt by them to attack these forces.
Iraqi policeman Hamzeh Atayah Mohsin who survived the American fire said that the three Iraqi policemen were opening fire at a suspected car they were chasing when the Americans opened fire at their car to the west of Baghdad.
The first policeman was killed in the car while the second was killed when he was leaving it raising his hands so that the US soldiers would know he is from the Iraqi police. A spokesman for the American forces considered the killing of the two Iraqi policemen as victims of "friendly fire." The incident came after the killing of one American soldier and wounding another in an explosion which targeted their patrol in Baqouba city in Deyali governorate, northern East Baghdad.
Eye- witnesses said that a group of American armored vehicles was exposed yesterday at dawn to an attack by missiles in al-Miqdadiyah city in the same area.
The witnesses said that one American soldier was killed during the attack, while a missile fell near the city's police center.
Meantime, two bombs went off near the British embassy in Baghdad. The explosion took place when a truck carrying containers was entering the embassy. As a result one driver was wounded and was admitted to hospital. No casualties were reported in the lines of workers in the embassy.
Meanwhile units from the engineering contingents in the US army are making patrols in the Tigris river all the day round, especially in the area neighboring Saddam Hussein's palace in Tikrit. These patrols are intended to ensure security and protection and to monitor any possible attack from the river side.
All these incidents coincided with a massive demonstration conducted by 3000 Iraqis in al-Nasereyah city calling for the resignations of the municipal council.
The demonstrators stressed their readiness to do anything in order to quit this council. The demonstration went out in response to the call made by the Islamic parties in al-Nasereyah situated to the north of al-Basra. The citizens of the city accuse the council of not being a representative for citizens and as being under the control of the occupation forces.
