Assabah: Sahara issue, a cause for whole Moroccan nation, concerns but an elite in Algeria
Morocco-Algeria, Politics, 8/11/2003

The international community is convinced that the Sahara issue is the cause of the whole Moroccan nation, while it concerns only an elite in Algeria, the daily in Arabic Assabah said Saturday.

Algeria thought Morocco could never recover its Sahara unless at the cost of a war, and since its calculations turned false, it sought a means to "poke its nose" in this issue it had totally fabricated, the paper says in an editorial, adding that "Algeria's top officials recognize themselves having invented the problem to prevent Morocco from claiming the Sahara."

On grounds of defending democracy, independence and peoples' right to self-determination, Algeria "seeks to divide the Maghreb, hamper its development and turn the region into spot of tension to set up foreign bases."

If Moroccans are unanimous on the Sahara issue, "voices are starting to rise in Algeria to denounce the authorities' support to the separatists," as evidenced by the statement of spokesman for the Algerian Labor Party, Louiza Hanoune, who said Algerians know they have no right to the Sahara, the daily concludes.
