Europe to join peace plan in Sudan
Sudan-European Union, Politics, 8/9/2003

The European Union called yesterday Sudan to reach a final settlement in order to put an end to the civil war which has been ongoing since 1983 and this is to be during the peace negotiations to be held on Sunday in Kenya.

Italy, who presides over the current rotating presidency of the European Union said in a statement that the European Union considers it is the right time to reach a final settlement on issues which are still pending in order to put an end to the conflict and the sufferings of the Sudanese people.

By the end of July, the Sudanese government announced it is ready to resume negotiations with the southern rebels of Sudan on August 10th in Nakoro, Kenya.

These negotiations are supervised by the government's authority for development, IGAD, which is composed of Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan, Uganda and Somalia.

The recent negotiations stopped on July 12th following the government's rejection of proposals on agreements signed between the two sides in 2002 over sharing authorities and resources of the country and security settlements for a 6- year transitional period.

The statement read that the European Union calls on sides to work actively with IGAD's mediators in order to reach a comprehensive solution based on strong respect of the state of the law, human rights and individual freedom.
