Le Matin du Sahara et du Maghreb: US draft resolution on sahara a backward step
Morocco-USA, Politics, 8/8/2003

The draft resolution over the Sahara tabled by the United States in the Security Council is "a backward step" compared to all projects submitted part of the issue, "Le Matin du Sahara et du Maghreb" daily said.

The pro-government newspaper wondered about the reasons that made the United States back an initiative that is in complete contradiction even with the UN Security Council's resolutions and framework plan that advocated a political dialogue on the basis of the respect of the Moroccan sovereignty.

"Le Matin du Sahara et du Maghreb" believes that the new American attitude toward Morocco "should be a warning for us and incite us to assess the real value of the so-called friendly relations to understand that only the interest of nations should prevail and that the remaining is mere talk of diplomats in salons."

According to the paper, the American attitude "may conceal another side of the US strategy in the region of northwest Africa where the Algerian oil weighs to make the American presence accepted by all even if it implies making us accept a solution that would give the US and its allies exorbitant advantages."

The change in the US attitude "may ultimately shake the regional scene and bring potential threats to peace. It is not an evolution in the quest for peace but indeed a dangerous setback," it went on underlining that facing such a situation "Morocco cannot not react and it does not run out of arguments to defend its interests and territorial integrity."

Morocco, the paper recalled, refused the draft plan of UN Secretary General Personal Envoy James Baker, insisting that it is in contradiction with its national interests.

"Isn't the attempt to divide states by creating small manipulated entities incapable of taking care of themselves, an act encouraging terrorism and instability in the region? Wondered the daily.

Le Matin du Sahara et du Maghreb noted that it may be an attempt that is aimed to lead to another (.) compromise that has nothing to do with the Sahara question, underlining that the international political juncture imposes its priorities and since Americans are the only ones who want to manage international crises, they are engaged in several fronts at one time.
