Le Matin du Sahara et du Maghreb: Morocco deplores Spain's stand over sahara
Morocco-Spain, Politics, 8/4/2003
Moroccan delegate-minister for foreign affairs and cooperation, Taieb Fassi Fihri, deplored Spain's role at the UN Security Council underlining that Madrid mobilized in favor of "a thesis that does not correspond at all to that clarified by Morocco."
We were expecting that Spain, a neighboring country that represents a friendly people, and which had a very frank dialogue with us would be in favor of a compromising solution, Fihri told "Le Matin du Sahara et du Maghreb" paper.
We witnessed nevertheless a mobilization by the Spanish chairmanship in the UN Security Council in favor of a particular thesis that does not correspond at all to that we have clarified to the Spanish authorities.
About the latest proposal of UN secretary general personal envoy, James Baker, the delegate-minister said "Morocco knew about the proposal in January 2003 and immediately expressed strong reserves by rejecting it for different reasons."
The minister added that it is "a drawback that contains transitory modalities which are extremely perilous and non-democratic," underscoring that the Kingdom maintains its rejection of the plan, but is ready to engage in a dialogue with all concerned parties under the auspices of the United Nations to reach a final, fair and equitable solution that guarantees the welfare of the whole Maghreb."
Resolution 1495 that was unanimously adopted by the Security Council over the Sahara backs the principle that "no solution will be imposed and that it should first be negotiated and accepted by all parties, he went on.
