Jordan-Israel, Politics, 8/2/2003
An Israeli military source announced yesterday that the occupation army will found in the coming months the first group of women fighters in charge of monitoring the southern region of the border with Jordan.
The group will include several units of troops in the course of a force deployed in Wadi Araba, the desert area adjoining Jordan, and 70% of members of this group will be women who will serve for three years in the army. The same period men serves.
Women in Israel have to be subjected to a compulsory military service of 18 months as opposed to 36 months for men. Most of women do not serve in fighting units.
