Georgian, Ukraine units to Iraq

The American embassy in Georgia yesterday distributed field military equipment to the Georgian soldiers who are preparing to travel to Iraq on a 6- month mission for keeping peace in the country under the leadership of the US occupation forces.

The spokeswoman for the embassy said that "the troops, the engineers and the doctors who will leave shortly for Iraq in a mission to keep peace will last for 6 months -- were provided with field uniforms and military shoes and bullet-proof covers."

Some 100 troops will leave for Iraq by the beginning of August where they will be deployed in the region which falls under the American control and will be financed by the US.

Meantime, the President of Ukraine, Leonid Kuchma, yesterday signed a decree for transferring the Ukraine contingent for fighting chemical weapons from Kuwait to Iraq, where it will join a Polish peace keeping force that will replace the American occupation forces southern Baghdad. This contingent includes 448 members and its mission will be to search for chemical and biological weapons.

It is however, decided that some 1647 Ukraine soldiers will arrive in Iraq on August 7 to joint the Polish force which controls the area of south central Iraq, which includes al-Najaf.
