Abdullah: Abbas's talks in Washington show American's seriousness
Jordan-Palestine, Politics, 8/1/2003
Jordan's King Abdullah II considered during his meeting with the two members of the US Congress Tom Delay and Ander Crenshaw who visited Amman yesterday that the talks held by the Palestinian prime minister Mahmoud Abbas in Washington reveal the seriousness of the American administration to supporting the peace process.
The Jordanian official news agency Petra quoted the King as saying that Abbas's talks in Washington "positively indicates the seriousness of the US to revive the peace process." He stressed the need of "supporting the government of the Palestinian prime minister to enable it of running matters in the Palestinian territories, effectively."
The Jordanian King also warned against evacuating "Jerusalem of its Arab citizens especially the Christian among them." On the other hand, member of the Palestinian Legislative council Saeb Oreikat yesterday criticized statements made by Delay in which he called on Israel to ignore the truce declared by the Palestinian groups. He said that these statements are "devilish and show that they are more extremist in Israel and do not help the peace process." He added that these statements constitute "a violation to the concepts of democracy, freedom and peace, and if the world is seeking peace, then people like him (Delay) seek to destroy any opportunity for peace."
Delay, who is the leader of the Republican House Majority Leader at the US Congress said on Wednesday at the Israeli Knesset that the truce declared by the Palestinian groups "is not enough to have Israel get rid off the Palestinian terrorism." He continued "false security is not a security, and the killers who take a leave for 90 days will continue to be killers."
