Egypt, Politics, 7/31/2003

The opposition writer Jalal Aref has won the post of the Egyptian journalists Union chairman yesterday against the government's nominee, Salah Muntasir, in one of the most heated press elections in two decades.

Aref ( 56 year old) who is for the Naserite trend received 1785 votes against 1415 votes of 4200 journalists who attended the General Assembly, for Muntasir ( 70 year old), one of the prominent writer for al-Ahram daily, who is blamed by his opponents for his inclination to normalization and visits to Israel, in a violation to the union's position to that effect.

The post of the chairman of the journalists union is for two years to be renewed just for one time. According to the text of the Arab journalists, Aref will be, according to his new post, the chairman of the Arab journalists federation, which has Cairo as headquarters.

Worthy mentioning that the elections which were due on June 25 were an issue of judicial controversy that resulted in postponing it, as the administrative judiciary court of the Egyptian state council sentenced on June 15 to stop nomination for the elections according to appeals filed by a group of journalists. Three days later, the court sentenced to alienate former journalists union chairman Ibrahim Nafe who is al-Ahram chief editor from nominating himself to the post for the third time.
