AL denies contacts over Iraq's representations, discusses an American request to sent troops to Iraq
Regional-Iraq, Politics, 7/30/2003
A meeting for the Arab follow up committee at the level of ministers discusses on August 5 an American request to dispatch Arab forces to Iraq, according to the chairman of the press office at the AL Husam Zaki.
Zaki said that the foreign ministers of the Arab follow up committee "will discuss means of dealing with the new transitional governing council in Iraq beside sending Arab peace keeping forces to Iraq."
He added that "the question before the Arab ministers is that will every Arab country send forces individually, should this be at a decision by the UN and what sort of resolution by the UN will be on that." He noted that this matter "is strongly debated at the media and certain Arab states which declared its positions concerning it."
Zaki said that "the issue of representing the transitional governing council to occupy Iraq's seat at the Arab league has not been decided by the AL general secretariat because this is the specialty of the Arab member states." Noting that the AL "did not receive any contacts to this effect, so far."
He denied what was stated that a delegation representing the the transitional governing council will visit the AL next week to discuss the issue of Iraq's representation at the meetings of the Arab foreign ministers in September. He added that the position of the AL towards the formation of the governing council is what was declared by the AL secretary general who "considered it as an important step that should be followed by other steps towards transferring the authorities to the Iraqi people. "
He expressed conviction that the extent of the council's authority is decided by work credibility for the interest of Iraq and returning back of sovereignty to Iraq and enabling the Iraqis to rule themselves. However, al-Sabah paper of the "Iraqi media network established by the occupation forces said yesterday that the transitional governing council intends to send a delegation representing it to the Arab League in order to draw a mechanism on Iraq's participation in the AL periodical meetings. The paper explained that the delegation which it did not set a date for its departure to Cairo will "discuss with Amr Mousa the mechanism of Iraq's return back to the AL and attending meetings of the Arab Foreign ministers."
