Syria, Politics, 7/29/2003
The "civil society revival committees in Syria" yesterday issued a statement welcomed the decision taken by the Baath Party regional leadership no, 408 for separating the party from the authority's executive work. announcing that the selection of employees should be according to efficiency criterion rather that Party affiliation.
The committees called for the "implementation of the decision effectively," noting that this decision was taken between 1980 and 2000 but was not implemented.
The statement added that "the committees sees in the decision a first step on the road to correcting relations of the Baath party with the state, a link which is more expectedly behind the problems and resulted in deformations in the past 40 years and resulted in putting the state under the supervision of the Baath Party supervision and leadership."
The statement considered that the "decision is the first step in the right direction and it is necessary to be followed by gradual and studied steps of dismantling the state from the party, because that serves the interest of the homeland and the citizen, alike."
