Al-Ahmar's speech at DCRP rally in Tunisia
Tunisia-Syria, Politics, 7/29/2003
Syria's Assistant Secretary General of Ba'ath Arab Socialist Party, Abdullah al-Ahmar attended yesterday morning the opening session of the 4th conference of the Democratic Constitutional Rally Party ( DCRP ) in Tunisia.
He said that this conference is considered a big opportunity to review what has been fulfilled through the party's and people's struggle under the leadership of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
"An overall view at the stages passed by ( DCRP ), particularly after the changing movement lead by President Ben Ali, shows clearly the big progress which has been accomplished in your country taken by the party's method and steps of developments," he added.
"We wish to express our relief over the developments and progress attained in Tunis, this progress will positively reflect on the Tunisian people and on the joint Arab action in achieving the pan-Arab goals," al-Ahmar said.
He stressed that the recent stage has witnessed an enhancement in the bilateral relations between the two parties and between the two peoples. President al-Assad's visit to Tunis in 2001 formed an important turning point in the bilateral relations, he added.
The mutual visits and contacts between the Ba'ath party and ( DCRP ) have contributed in boosting the party, people and governmental relations, he said.
Syria is witnessing, since President Bashar al-Assad -- the Secretary General of the Ba'ath party -- took his constitutional responsibilities three years ago, a continued effort aiming at the development and modernization in all fields, he added.
This progress includes developing the party, state and community in a way that leads to boost Syria's capability in facing the challenges, he continued.
He went on saying that "your conference is being held under international and regional complicated conditions, where the dominating and aggressive powers try to exploit the Sep. 11 attacks in the U.S.A to execute their plans of hegemony."
"Israel exploited these events and launched its terrorist aggression against our people in Palestine. It tried to show that its aggression was a part of self - defense, whereas the Palestinian resistance is a terrorism. Israel is responsible for hindering the exerted efforts to achieve just and comprehensive peace in the region through continuing its occupation to the Palestinian territories, building settlements and seizing the Palestinian people."
He added that "just and comprehensive peace can't be achieved unless through implementing the international resolutions and the peace for land principle."
Regarding the Iraqi question, al-Ahmar said that the Iraqi people expressed rejection over the American-British occupation in different ways calling for immediate withdrawal to the occupation troops and to enable the Iraqi people to choose their national government that maintains Iraq's unity and integrity.
Talking about the Arab current challenges that face the Arab nation, al-Ahmar stressed that this situation needs an Arab unified stance that takes into consideration the current developments and changes in the world and to overcome the state of weakness and anxiety that prevails in the Arab states in order to achieve the Arab economic and humanitarian unity.
The inter-Arab solidarity, the Arab-Afro-Asian solidarity and the Arab-Mediterranean-European solidarity are not a mere name or something theoretical but are a necessity, he added.
"Syria has worked with all the Arab brothers to activate this solidarity and has stressed that peace in the region can't be achieved unless it be just and through the returning of the Arab legitimate rights and comprehensively," al-Ahmar said.
Syria called for reviving the peace process on the Syrian-Lebanese track which is based on Madrid terms of reference, UN resolutions, Peace for land formula and resuming negotiations from the point they stopped at, al-Ahmar added.
