Supreme court adjourns ruling in request to grant expats voting right
Morocco, Judicial, 7/26/2003
Morocco's supreme court on Thursday adjourned for further consultation its ruling on a request by associations of Moroccan expatriates to grant Moroccans living abroad the right to vote and to run for Moroccan elections.
The decision on the request tabled by a group of four associations of Moroccans living abroad was announced at a public session.
The lawyer called for giving the Moroccan expatriates the right to vote and to run for elections in Morocco saying that some 10% of Moroccan population is excluded.
The public prosecutor argued that the Moroccan electoral law only grants to immigrants the right to vote during referendum ballots and that only nationals living in Morocco have the right to vote in other elections.
