Morocco voices readiness to carry on efforts for peace in Mano River region
Morocco-Algeria, Politics, 7/25/2003
Morocco is ready to carry on efforts to restore peace in the Mano river region part of the Rabat process, Morocco's ambassador to the United Nations, Mohamed Bennouna, told on Wednesday UN secretary general, Kofi Annan.
Morocco is ready to participate in the UN moves to maintain peace in Liberia, he stressed.
The UN secretary general asked Bennouna to convey feelings of gratitude and esteem to king Mohammed VI for Morocco's commitment in the peace process in West Africa.
A summit gathering heads of state of the Mano river region including presidents of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, respectively Lansana Conte, Ahmad Tejan Kabbah and Charles Taylor, was held in February 2002 in Morocco. The three heads of state signed a document committing to promote peace and entente in the sub-region of Mano river. The event was followed on April 2002 by a meeting of the three countries' foreign ministers who showed readiness to implement the Rabat declaration.
The UN secretary general and the Moroccan diplomat also evoked the Sahara question in the light of the latest developments in the Security Council.
