Security Council members disagree over draft resolution to support Bakers' plan on Sahara
Morocco-UN, Politics, 7/25/2003

The UN security council, meeting on Wednesday at the level of experts, failed to agree on a draft resolution to support the latest plan for the Sahara floated by the UN secretary general's personal envoy, James Baker.

Several delegates of member countries said the Council consultations were adjourned to an unspecified date because of divergences in approaches among the member countries.

The meeting looked into the draft resolution in light of the proposed amendments and failed to reach any agreement on the resolution paragraphs that deal with Baker's plan.

The experts urged for avoiding any wording that would mean that the security council is approving the proposal and asking parties to implement it.

Morocco had officially notified to the United Nations secretary general its refusal of the latest plan proposed by Baker and said it remains ready to start dialogue to reach a fair and realistic settlement to the issue.
