Nouakchott closes Saudi charity establishments

News reports in Nouakchott said that the Mauritania authorities closed the Saudi Islamic call and guidance ( Dawa and Irshad) center and the office of the Saudi Islamic relief commission in Nouakchott.

One month earlier, Mauritania's authorities closed the Saudi Institute for Islamic studies in Mauritania. These measures come within a campaign of arrests in the lines of Islamists in Mauritania continued since more than two months.

The coupe attempt which was carried out by rebel soldiers in June was followed by arresting scores of Islamists and activists in the Baath Party which sympathizes with the former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein following the war launched by the US against Iraq.

In a speech he delivered, the Mauritanian president Mu'aweya Wild Taye' linked indirectly between the Islamists and a group of nationalist officers in the failed coupe attempt which took place on June 8th.

The coupe was preceded by a campaign of arrest that covered Islamists and certain Arab nationals. Taye' regime had provoked the majority of the people of Mauritania -- of a Muslim majority -- over normalizing relations with Israel, as the two countries are linked to full diplomatic relations.
