Sudanese intellectuals urge Bashir to oppose extremism
Sudan, Politics, 7/23/2003
Hundreds of Sudanese intellectuals have urged the Sudanese president Omar Hassan al-Bashir to oppose for the spread of Islamic extremism which they said threaten the future of the country
Sudanese dailies yesterday issued a text of a message sent by 404 Sudanese intellectuals to Bashir in which they criticized a Fatwa (religious call) issued by 14 Islamists (including University rectors, leaders of Muslim Brothers group and several Imams ) in June, in which they accused communists, socialists and democrats to backing away from Islam.
In their message, the intellectuals said "we consider it our duty as intellectuals, writers, artists, academics, journalists and vocationals to bring to your attention (this issue).. so as to take appropriate measures that will be conducive to prevent this grave threat."
The intellectuals denounced the Fatwa which sets financial rewards to anyone who kills 10 intellectuals. They said that the Fatwa poisons the atmosphere of tolerance in Sudan and threatens national unity and the security of the homeland.
