Al-Ayam: Sudanese groups warn against being ignored
Sudan, Politics, 7/21/2003
The southern Sudanese military groups -- which signed with the government the two agreements of Khartoum and Fashouda for peace -- have warned against being ignored in the security and military arrangements included in the next peace agreements between the government and the rebels of southern Sudan.
The chairman of the people's movement ( the allied group) Lam Acole rejected in a statement by the Sudanese daily al-Ayam ( days) issued yesterday putting his forces within the forces of the Sudanese army or annexing them to the rebels or desolving their role. He explained that the movement has agreements signed with the government to keep his forces in their positions and under the control of its leaders throughout the provisional period.
He added that should the government sign security arrangements with the rebels, both of them "will not be able to subdue our forces," noting the need to take into account all groups which carry weapons and are not able to take part in IGAD negotiations, if a just and comprehensive peace is to be achieved in Sudan.
