Most Security Council members oppose Baker's plan on Sahara
Morocco-UN, Politics, 7/18/2003
Most members of the U.N. security council confided to MAP correspondent in the United Nations that they oppose the "Baker plan" as experts met on Wednesday to discuss a draft resolution approving the plan submitted last Friday.
Experts who attended the debates that lasted over 2 hours and a half said the general tendency among the Security Council member countries is to oppose the approval of the plan proposed by Baker, the UN secretary general personal envoy for the Sahara.
While the various delegations underscored the council's role as a facilitator in settling international disputes, they insisted on the need to carry on dialogue and negotiations to reach a solution accepted by all parties, as the only approach favoring the quest of a political settlement.
Experts will carry on Monday consultation over various proposals.
The Wednesday's experts session follows a closed-doors meeting held on Friday by the security council.
Morocco had officially notified to the United Nations secretary general its refusal of the latest plan proposed by the UN secretary general's personal envoy for the Sahara, James Baker.
Morocco also said it remains ready to start dialogue to reach a fair and realistic settlement to the issue.
