EU suspends embargoing the political wing of Hamas

Diplomats disclosed yesterday that the European Union suspended measures to ban the political wing of the Islamic resistance movement, Hamas, despite the pressures made by the US and Israel, after the movement accepted a cease fire.

By the beginning of this month July, the EU ambassador agreed to stop measures to add Hamas to the black list of banned terrorist organizations, placed by the European Union. A step which would be conducive to freeze its assets and trying its activists.

The EU leaders who met in Greece on June 200 before three Palestinian organizations announced a three-months truce called for an urgent discussion for the matter in order to take a tougher measure against the operations of money raising operations carried out by Hamas.

However, a high ranking diplomat in the EU said "in light of what had happened we agreed not to take any immediate measures.. we agreed to keep the case under test and revision and to return back to it if a cease violation takes place if Hamas return back to terrorism." In 2002, the European Union banned Ezz Eddine al-Qassam group, the military wing of the Hamas movement.
