Arab League's reform tops talks between Moroccan FM, Arab League's chief
Morocco-Regional, Politics, 7/17/2003
The reform of the Arab League was the focus of discussions held in Rabat on Tuesday between Moroccan foreign affairs and cooperation minister, Mohamed Benaissa, and Arab League's secretary general Amr Moussa who arrived on a two-day visit to the kingdom.
Benaissa said at the end of his meeting with Moussa that Morocco has called for the Arab body's reform, recalling that late King Hassan II was among the first Arab leaders to call for the reconstruction of the Arab League.
Asked about Morocco's contribution in the reforms, the minister said King Mohammed VI insisted during the Arab summit held in Amman that the Arab League should study issues that directly interest Arab citizens, notably fighting poverty and illiteracy and setting up the necessary infrastructures to guarantee Arab societies integration in the world.
Consultations on reforms are still ongoing, noted Benaissa underlining that the outlines of the reconstruction process will be presented by Moussa during the meeting of Arab foreign ministers next September.
In the same vein, the Arab League's chief said he examined with the Moroccan head of diplomacy different proposals related to reforming the league's structures.
Moussa who was also received on Tuesday by King Mohammed VI is visiting Morocco part of a tour in the Arab states to probe with Arab leaders the current situation in the Arab world and the future of Arab joint action. After Morocco, the Arab league's chief will go to Mauritania.
