Okaz: Sabah al-Ahmad: we should forget Iraq's aggression against Kuwait
Kuwait-Iraq, Politics, 7/17/2003

The prime minister of the new Kuwaiti government, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah, has drawn the outlines of his internal and external policy, mainly concentrating on Kuwait's Arab orientation and the desire to close the file of the past with Iraq, and to remark that the US will keep its military presence in Kuwait but the number of its troops will be decided following the formation of a government in Baghdad.

In an interview with the Saudi daily Okaz issued yesterday, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad whose government is expected to win the confidence of the parliament before next Saturday, referring to Iraq, said that "it is difficult to talk about relations with a country which does not have a government, and when the Iraqi government is formed, our relations can start." Sabah al-Ahmad explained "we wait for a government which thinks of the people and future of Iraq only," He stressed "we have to forget the issue of Iraq's aggression against Kuwait, we should put it past us."

The Kuwaiti prime minister expressed his hope that the "Arab League will be our house and to place all our interest to amending the AL constitution so as the Arab nation will be in the same pot and to give full confidence for the Arab League," over which there were Kuwaiti voices denouncing its role and deploring the policy conducted by its secretary general Amr Moussa during the American war against Iraq.

He added that the USA will keep its military presence in Kuwait, but their number will be decided after the formation of the government in Iraq. He explained that the American military presence has been in Kuwait since some time, and therefore this presence will continue, and will be agreed upon when the Iraqis complete the formation of their government and according to what was "agreed upon in the Treaty."

He also added "Our relations with the US proceed normally and there is a cooperation agreement with the US which enabled us to be able to contribute" to liberate our brothers in Iraq."
