Al-Watan: Saudi efforts to revive the economy
Saudi Arabia, Economics, 7/17/2003

Saudi Arabia's services ministry is preparing to propose 17,800 jobs already occupied by foreigners to be assumed by Saudi citizens.

This was in the framework of the government plan to "Saudize" posts in the Kingdom. The Saudi daily al-Watan yesterday quoted the deputy minister of civil service Abdul Rahman al-Abdul Qader as saying that these posts include 16204 in general education, 854 posts in private education, 42 in the ministry of defense and aviation and 700 at computer factories.

He said that details of the specialization and date to applying to these posts will be issued shortly.

Meantime, in the context of the attempt to revive the economy, Riyadh yesterday signed several contracts for gas exploration with a coalition including Royal Dutch Shell -- the British- Dutch company and the French company Total Elf.

The Saudi oil minister Ali al-Nueimi said that the project covers an area of 200,00 square kilometers in al-Roub' al-Khali ( the empty quarters) to the south of the kingdom. This was, however, coincided with the announcement of the visit to be held by the Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah to Russia in September in order to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the field of oil and gas investment.

Al-Nueimi announced following a meeting with the deputy chairman of the board of directors in Shell company and representatives for Total Elf, that this project is considered "an important step and a strong breakthrough in the world investment fields in the operations of gas exploration and production in the Kingdom and fall in the context of a list of other projects which are implemented through world oil companies." He said that these steps come to accelerate the growth and prosperity of the Saudi economy for serving the country and the citizen in attracting foreign investments and enlarging the base of the Saudi economy and providing best investments for the Saudi natural resources."
