Al-Assad underlines UN role in Iraq

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad received on Wednesday United Nations envoy in Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello. Talks during the meeting dealt with UN exerted efforts to form the transitional governing council in Iraq.

De Mello expressed hope that UN and Iraq's neighbors will support this council to play efficient role in the Iraqi stability and security and to prepare to a democratic election that realizes the Iraqi integrity and unity.

President al-Assad stressed the important role of the UN to enable the Iraqi people to restore their liberty and to achieve their independence.

Al-Assad pointed out that Syria as a member in the UN and nonpermanent in the UN security Council and as an Arab neighboring country to Iraq has great concern over the Iraqi unity and territorial integrity. And Syria will support all steps taken by the UN to end the occupation of Iraq.
