Ivanov in Jordan to strengthen UN Security Council role

Russia has called for the implementation of the Roadmap comprehensively and to enhancing the role of the UN Security Council in the process of rebuilding Iraq, while Jordan has stressed the need of enhancing security in Iraq and avoiding "sectarian representation" of the Iraqi political forces in the institutions of the forthcoming authority.
Talks of the Russian foreign minister Igor Ivanov in Amman yesterday concentrated on the two said issues during his meeting with the Jordanian King Abdullah II and with his Jordanian counterpart Marwan Muasher.
The Jordanian King said during his meeting with the Russian foreign minister that the restoration of security to Iraq is consolidated through enabling the Iraqis assuming their countries' affairs, adding "the Iraqi's assuming of their own affairs will enhance the attitude towards peace and democracy inspired by the people of Iraq."
Abdullah and Ivanov stressed "the need of working for supporting security and restoring normal life to Iraq," stressing the importance that the Iraqi people will have the full option to decide their fate and the future and form of the rule in Iraq." The Russian foreign minister said after his meeting with his Jordanian counterpart Marwan Muasher that the formation of the Iraqi provisional rule council constitutes "a step in the right path." He said that the formation of the council should be followed by other steps that will be conducive to the formation of a legitimate authority but it is necessary to enhance the role of the UN Security Council in this regard." Ivanov who came to Jordan from the Palestinian territories will be visiting Syria, Lebanon and Egypt in the context of his regional tour.
For his part, the Jordanian foreign minister said that the formation of the Iraqi provisional rule council "is a positive step." He added that the awaiting for Iraqi government "should preserve Iraq's unity and sovereignty and will be a representation for all Iraqis and not necessarily dependent on sectarian representation, rather than the unity of the Iraqis."
As for his visit to the Palestinian territories where he had met with the Palestinian President Yasser Arafat and the prime minister Mahmoud Abbas, Ivanov said that his country "awaits full implementation and unconditionally for all items of the Roadmap," considering that the Roadmap constitutes "a real opportunity for a political settlement for the Israeli- Palestinian conflict."
