Kuwait: the formation of the first government outside the control of the crown prince

Kuwait's designated prime minister Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah yesterday formed his first Kuwaiti government. As usual, al-Sabah family kept the main posts in this Cabinet. This was upon the decision taken by Kuwait's Amir Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah to separate the two posts of the crown prince and the presidency of the government.
The step taken by Sheikh Jaber to separate and form the government of Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad in light of the increasing internal voices demanding reforms and changes to get out of the political stalemate. The two moves also came amid great changes taking place in the region and the fall of Baghdad under occupation as well as the diverted American interest. All these issues place the new Kuwaiti government before several internal and external challenges.
In the new government which is composed of 15 ministers, Sabah al-Ahmad quit the post of the foreign minister, he had been leading for 20 years assumed now by Sheikh Muhammad Sabah al-Salem al-Sabah who also assumed the post of the acting minister of social affairs and labor, while former acting minister of information and oil Sheikh Ahmad Fahad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah has the ministry of energy which includes oil, electricity and waters.
The Kuwaiti news agency said that the ministry of the interior was assigned to Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah who also assumed the post of the deputy premier.
In Cairo, the secretary general of the Arab League expressed his congratulations for Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad over assuming the post of the prime minister. He expressed his confidence that "thanks to his wisdom and experience, he will lead Kuwait's ship." Mousa also expressed his conviction that Sabah al-Ahmad will spare no efforts to supporting Arab causes in this time in which we are in need to every made effort for unifying Arab ranks."
