Amir of Kuwait appoints Sabah al-Ahmad a Prime Minister

Kuwait's Amir Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah has issued a decree appointing the former prime minister Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah as a prime minister. This will be within political reforms demanded by the Kuwaiti political factions.

For the first time in the history of Kuwait, the post of the prime minister has been separated from the post of the Crown Prince after it used to be part of the political inheritance in the al-Sabah family, which ruled the country since its foundation in 1756.

Appointing the former prime minister in succession of Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah who had together the post of the crown prince and the post of the prime minister for many years. This decision will place the prime minister before legal inquiries in the Parliament, especially as the Kuwaiti constitution gives full ammunity for the ruler of the country and for the crown prince.

The Kuwaiti news agency said that the Amir's decree assigned the new prime minister to form a government and bring its members before the Amir. The Former Kuwaiti government resigned on July 6th, in line with the constitution, just one day after the legislative elections which was overwhelmed by political reforms.

Certain politicians consider that separating the post of the crown prince from the post of the prime minister is an important step to achieve political reforms in Kuwait and to enhance the authority of the parliament. However, others do not consider this measure enough and stress the need of electing a prime minister instead of appointing him by the Amir.
