EgyptÕs illiteracy rate reduced to 29.8 percent

An official denied reports that EgyptÕs illiteracy reached 44 per cent of population, revising the percentage down to 29.8.
speaking at a press conference, Ehab Elwi, head of the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS), said that illiteracy rates were reduced by 10 per cent over the last six years, thanks to the earnest efforts exerted by the Egyptian government.
He said that the illiteracy rate of 1996 has been cut down from 39.4 per cent - 17,634 million people - to reach 29.8 in January 2003 - 13,692 millions.
