Jordan-Egypt, Economics, 7/11/2003

Jordanian minister of energy Muhammad al-Bayeynah said yesterday that the Jordanian King Abdullah II and the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will inaugurate on July 27th the Jordanian- Egyptian joint gas project between the two cities in Taba in Egypt and Aqaba in Jordan.

The Jordanian minister said the King "will head together with a Jordanian delegation to Taba on July 27 to take part with the Egyptian president on the inauguration of the Egyptian part of the gas pipe." He added that the Jordanian King and the Egyptian president and their delegations will head after that on board of a boat inaugurated recently to al-Aqaba to open the naal part of the gas pipeline which links Taba to Aqaba and extends at 15 Km.

However, the land part of the pipeline which links between al-Areesh city on the Mediterranean and Taba on the al-Aqaba Gulf was completed in January. The gas pipeline project was signed in June 2001. Amman chose the Egyptian Consortium " East Gas Egyptian company " to build the Jordanian part of the regional gas pipeline which aims at transporting Egyptian natural gas, according to the " BOT" ( Build, Operate and Transfer " system for a maximum period of time of 40 years.

The cost of the regional gas pipeline project is USD one billion. It aims at transporting Egyptian natural gas to Jordan from there to the Syrian port of Banias on the Mediterranean and then to al-Zahrani refinery in Lebanon in 2005 and might be later to Cyprus in 2006.
