Sweden, Norway NGOs seriously concerned over situation of Moroccans sequestered in Tindouf
Morocco-Sweden, Politics, 7/10/2003
Several humanitarian associations in Sweden and Norway expressed during a seminar held last weekend in Gutenburg (Sweden) serious concern over the harsh living conditions of Moroccans sequestered in Tindouf camps (south-western Algeria), a Swedish NGO told MAP.
The seminar, themed "the Situation in North Africa and in Tindouf Camps," organized by Swedish "Rada Barnen" ngo, brought together representatives of different humanitarian associations who expressed solidarity with the Moroccans who are detained in south-western Algeria and who are denied their most fundamental rights.
Spokesperson of the Swedish NGO "ADESETI," Yahya Alamine, revealed that 200 innocent young Sahrawis were cold-bloodily executed by Polisario for the simple reason that they disagree with its methods.
He further denounced "the inhuman practices against the populations sequestered in these camps as well as embezzlement of international aid destined to them by Polisario (Algeria-backed secessionist group) leaders.
"We, Sahraouis, have been suffering from torture for long years in Tindouf camps and we have now the right to publicly condemn these practices," he noted.
A group of ngos, including Rada Barnen, Amnesty International and the International Committee of the Red Cross, pledged to open a probe on the situation of the populations sequestered in Tindouf.
In this regard, Rada Barnen and other Swedish NGOs said they have reports on the "inadmissible activities" of some Polisario leaders, including the disappearance of expensive apparatuses offered by Swedish NGOs to equip medical centers in Tindouf.
Some 1,160 Moroccan POWs have been sequestered in Tindouf camps for more than twenty years and they are called by some organizations the world's longest-serving POWs.
