Kuwait to separate the post of Crown Prince from the Prime Minister
Kuwait, Politics, 7/10/2003

Political sources in Kuwait said that Kuwait's Amir Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah intends to seperate the office of prime minister held by Sheikh Saad al-Abdullah al-Sabah from his authority as Crown Prince in preparation to implement a series of political reforms following the parliamentary elections held last Saturday.

These circles said that Sheikh Jaber will issue a decree according to which he will appoint a new prime minister in succession of Sheikh Saad. And for the first time in the history of Kuwait, the post of the prime minister will be independent from the ruling system establishment, after it used to be part of the political inheritance in al-Sabah family which has been ruling the country since its foundation.

The Kuwaiti daily Kuwaiti Times said that this step will put an end to the political norm which states that the crown prince also holds the post of the prime minister. This step will also put the prime minister under legal accountability, especially as the Kuwaiti constitution places the Amir of Kuwait and the Crown Prince beyond accountability.

The Kuwaiti well-known politician Jasem al-Sadoun considered separating the post of the Crown Prince from that of the Prime Minister as an important step to achieve political reforms in Kuwait and strengthen the authority of the parliament. Al-Sadoun said that this will at least to enable the parliament to change the prime minister if he fails.

However, certain politicians do not consider this measure as enough in the context of their demand to political reforms in the country.
