Four hydraulic power stations on Nile barrages
Egypt, Economics, 7/8/2003

The Ministry of Electricity and Energy is currently making economic and technical feasibility studies to exploit waterfalls by establishing four new hydraulic power generating stations on the Nile Barrages with a capacity of 36 megawatts to produce 175 million kilowatts of electricity per hour annually.

Minister of Electricity and Energy Hassan Younis said that the sector is implementing a non-traditional programme for exploiting waterfalls in generating electricity to increase the power capacities to 2740 megawatts which represent 18 percent of the total generated power. The High Dam power station contributes by 2100 megawatts, Aswan station (1) by 280 megawatts, Aswan (2) by 270 megawatte and Esna by 90 megawatts.

Feasibility studies are currently under way to establish 4 small hydraulic power stations on the Delta barrages, Damietta branch, with a capacity of 20 megawatts, Rashid branch with a capacity of 10 megawatts and Zefta with 3.5 megawatts and "El Tewfiki" Canal with a capacity of 2.5 megawatts to produce electricity estimated at 175 million kilowatts per hour annually. Implementation of these projects are expected to be finalized by 2009.

The Minister clarified that it has been decided to operate "Al Lahoon" hydraulic power generating station before the end of this year to add 6 million kilowatts per hour annually to the national power network capacity, pointing to the fact that the technical feasibility studies are under way for establishing the new hydraulic "Assiut" power station with a capacity of 40 megawatts to produce 270 million kilowatts per hour.

The Minister added that one of the privileges of the hydraulic stations is that they do not produce detrimental thermal or gas emissions. They are clean and environment friendly and help to facilitate navigation and safeguard inundation due to their erection on the barrages and dams, pointing to the fact that most of these projects are implemented in rural areas which load to the development of the surrounding areas of these projects besides providing newworking opportunities.
