Saudi - Yemeni coordination: the two states security and stability are one
Yemen-Saudi Arabia, Politics, 7/7/2003
Saudi Arabia and Yemen stressed determination to fight terrorism, during the meetings of the 15th session of the Yemeni- Saudi coordination council in Sanaa held under the chairmanship of the Yemeni prime minister Abdul Qader Bajmal and the second Saudi deputy premier and minister of defense Prince Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz who arrived in Sanaa on Saturday on top of a delegation including 17 ministers.
Bajmal said in an inaugural speech at the council's session "we strongly announce that we are working together for fighting terrorism and aligning the symbols of terrorism with the right values." He stressed "Yemen and Saudi Arabia's security and stability constitute one base and a common fate." He added that the security agreement between the two states is being implemented in the best way.
Prince Sultan said "what the world is witnessing of dangers from terrorism requires from all of us further cooperation and coordination of efforts to protect our two countries from these risks." He added "we are looking for more brotherly cooperation in the security field including the common interests of our two countries."
In the economic cooperation area, Bajmal underlined the importance of Saudi Arabia developmental support for Yemen. He expressed hope that strategic relations between the two states will reflect positively on the conditions of the Yemeni emigrants working in Saudi Arabia whose number is estimated at 700,000 persons.
The two states will sign other agreements for cooperation in the areas of tourism, transport and agriculture.
Prince Sultan told the Saudi TV after his meeting with the Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh in Sanaa that the ministries of the interior in the two states started a continued effort to protect the two states and people. The Saudi minister of the interior Prince Nayef Bin Abdul Aziz and Yemen's interior minister Rashad Muhammad al-Oleimi signed in June in Riyadh an agreement to strengthen security measures on borders with the aim of putting an end to illegal crossing and smuggling operations.
Worthy mentioning that meetings of the council were suspended for 10 years because of the position adopted by the Yemeni government and considered by Saudi Arabia as a support for Iraq following the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait.
