Kampala accuses Khartoum of arming al- Rabb army
Sudan-Uganda, Politics, 7/7/2003
Uganda's defense minister announced that high ranking Uganda army officers visited Khartoum during the past days and discussed, according to Kampala, the issue of Sudan's resumption of providing weapons to al-Rabb army for resistance in Uganda.
Minister Amama Mayabazi said that a team including the army chief of staff and other officers went to Khartoum, in order to say to the Sudanese officials that "your soldiers support the leader of al-Rabb army for resistance, Joseph Kony, and here is the evidence." He explained that it is the second time in which Kampala provided such information.
He added that the Sudanese authorities confirmed this time that the matter will be solved "but this support has not stopped yet, because we have evidence to this effect." Kampala and Khartoum had resumed diplomatic relations in April 2002, after these relations were severed in 1995 because of reciprocated accusations of supporting the rebels of the two sides. Following the reconciliation, Khartoum permitted Uganda's army to deploy forces in southern Sudan in order to chase the forces of al-Rabb army for resistance.
This army has been fighting in north Uganda since 1988. It says it seeks to topple the regime of Yuri Mosiveni in order to establish a new rule based on "honoring God's ten commandments." In addition to numerous number of killings, some 800,000 Ugandans had evacuated.
