Libyan- Italian agreement to fight migration
Libya-Italy, Politics, 7/4/2003

Libya and Italy yesterday signed an agreement to fight illegal migration from the countries of North Africa to Europe via Italy, but the agreement did not indicate that it is possible for the Italian forces to run patrols on the Libyan coasts, as stated before upon talking about the context of the agreement, after this issue raised a heated debate in Libya as Tripoli refused to give up part of its sovereignty in this regard.

The agreement indicated the cooperation between the two countries in fighting emigrants smuggling gangs and also in relief operations. It stated that the Italian government will help Libya to implement the agreement.

The agreement was signed in Tripoli following a meeting between the Italian minister of the interior and Libya's Leader of the Revolution Colonel Muammar al Qathafi.
