Saudi Arabia, Politics, 7/3/2003
The Saudi Arabian authorities arrested the suspect Zafer Abdul Rahman al-Shahri and seized with him weapons in the southern part of the kingdom, according to the Saudi ministry of the interior yesterday following an operation to chase him on Sunday resulted in wounding 10 men in a helicopter crash.
In a statement, the ministry said that al-Shari, the employee at the ministry of education, was arrested in al-Nammas in Aseer area, adjoining the Yemeni borders. He started opening fire at security men on June 28th during an attempt to arrest him at his work place and this resulted in wounding one security man and al- Shahri had escaped then.
The statement said that following security investigations and in collaboration by Zafer's relatives he was arrested in a deserted house situated at the theatre center of al-Nammas province. There at the house were found 50 guns, 4 Kg of dynamites and other amounts of weapons.
Meantime, the secretary of the ministry of education in Saudi Arabia Khaled al-Awad yesterday denied that the responsibility of September 11 attacks to be the responsibility of the Saudi schools, noting that the Kingdom reviewed the curricula to confirm "peace and tolerance." Al-Awad said "those who accuse our education, especially learning books, use things out of their context and conceive these books illegally." He added " I can, easily, the same conclude that education in the US teaches terrorism because of Timothy McVeigh and Oklahoma," in remarks to blowing up of the federal building in the USA in 1995.
