Kuwait: a candidate for parliament promises to permit breweries
Kuwait, Politics, 7/3/2003
The candidate for the parliamentary elections in Kuwait, Muhammad Rashed al-Hafeiti, had promised to work for legalizing breweries in an attempt to attract the attention of voters for his campaign.
Al-Hafeiti who decided to continue his election campaign to the end despite his recognition that he has no chance to win said yesterday "the only way to get rid off alcohol addiction in Kuwait is to have alcohol legalized. Our youths seeks to find the resorts in drugs because of their inability to find out the right way to have fun."
Al-Hafeiti added while he was outside a tent that he is using as a center for his campaign decorated by American and British flags that "people have got tired of silly talks.. At least I fulfil what I promise of."
Al-Hafeiti who retired from his post as a veterinary and had two failed elections attempts to join the parliament said he wins the support of liberal politicians at a time when he receives threats from active Islamists.
