Al- Shara's interview with al-Jazira TV on regional issues, the USA
Syria-USA, Politics, 7/2/2003

Syria's Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara has stressed that Syria will be ready to attain the opportunity for peace if it is available and that peace will not be achieved without Syria and Lebanon.

In an interview with al-Jazira Channel broadcasted yesterday, al-Shara said that there are constant aspects in foreign Syrian policy as well as there are variable ones. The variables are represented in the way and in the adaptation with the new situations.

Answering a question about Iraq post-war and the American occupation, al - Shara said that undoubtedly what happened in Iraq, particularly on April 9th, the day of the collapse of Baghdad was a an earthquake. But this incident didn't come about from nothing. It was an outcome of what happened in Afghanistan, September 11th of 2001 attacks, and the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990.

About the situation in Iraq, he said that there is large ambiguity there, the U.S.A doesn't know what will happen after six months.

"Unifying Iraq is a vital and important issue and we don't know whether what is called the American Civil Administration in Iraq is able to do any positive matter in this field or not.. The Iraqi people are eager for contact with other Arab States.. we are interested in Iraq's national unity and integrity, he added.

About the Syrian - American relations, and the U.S. pressures against Syria, al - Shara said that parts of these pressures are unreasonable and parts of them are related to the whole region and connected to the situations in Palestine and Iraq.

He indicated that when the Iraqi resistance increases the pressure against U.S troops, the Americans increase provocation with Syria as if Syria is responsible for is what happening in Iraq.

Take an example, when Syria closed the offices of the Palestinian resistance and when they left Syria, the martyrdom operations have increased. So, that is a clear proof that Syria is not responsible of what is happening there, al - Shara said.

He continued that if the U.S.A wishes to succeed in its world policy, it should show less conceit and be more humble.

Syria doesn't accept to be dependent, she rejected to be dependent, or dominated as from ages ago.
